Ecological Disaster In Hungary

Hungary declared a state of emergency in three counties Tuesday after a flood of toxic red sludge from an alumina plant  engulfed several towns and burned people through their clothes. One official called it "an ecological disaster" that may threaten the Danube and other key rivers.So far, about 35.3 million cubic feet (1 million cubic meters) of sludge has leaked from the reservoir, affecting an estimated 15.4 square miles (40 square kilometers).The disaster agency said 390 residents had to be temporarily relocated and 110 were rescued from the flooded towns, including Kolontal, Devecser and Somlovasarhely.The sludge, a waste product in aluminum production, contains heavy metals and is toxic if ingested. Many of the injured sustained burns as the sludge seeped through their clothes, and two faced life-threatening conditions.

On 6 August 1945, the United States used a massive, atomic weapon against Hiroshima, Japan. While Japan is still trying to understand this devastation, three days later, beat the U.S. again, this time on Nagasaki. The Enola Gay was a B-29 Superfortress part of 509: e Composite Group.

The Enola Gay was escorted by two other bombers who carried cameras and a variety of gauges. Three other planes had left earlier to note that the weather conditions of possible targets.

It had been four cities selected as possible targets. Hiroshima was Kokura, Nagasaki, Niigata and cities chosen because they had been relatively untouched by war. Target Committee wanted the first bomb to be "sufficiently spectacular for the importance of the weapon to be internationally recognized when publicity on it was published."
